“Cool Whip”

#86: Girls, 2012

Copic Marker on Paper, Spring 2024

There is a mysterious quality to the midcentury quality to the midcentury low-cal invention of Cool Whip, where one could argue that this fluffy dessert accessory hangs somewhere in the balance of subtle and light to jarringly sweet. It's the perfect "slight-of-hand" diet treat that tastes correct, yet swiftly reveals a unique aftertaste that confirms it is merely a cousin of true whipped cream. Best as a modest dollop added to fresh fruit, pie, or sponge cake, or on its own as a convenient comfort food from the fridge when coping with adult pressures, dysfunctional relationships, and bad haircuts.
